The meeting begins with a brief overview of the pattern of Type 1, followed by an attention practice. We then have a panel interview – where several people are facilitated to bring alive to the group what it is like to have the pattern of Type 1, explaining their worldview, motivations, blessings and how to get the best from them in relationship. There is time afterwards for informal questions and discussion. In this way newcomers can become familiar with the Type pattern, while those who already know the Enneagram can consolidate and deepen their knowledge and understanding.
The principle characteristic of those with the pattern of Type 1 is the attention they pay to what is right or wrong – especially what is wrong that needs correction or improvement. The young One perceived the world to be critical and judgmental, punishing any ‘bad’ or spontaneous behaviour. They therefore learned to focus on getting things right and being self-disciplined and conscientious, in order to escape blame and guilt. Ones have high internal standards and are extremely sensitive to external criticism. They report the constant presence of a harsh internal critic, which affects self-esteem and causes tension, anxiety and frustration. Ones tend to be very aware of details and to delay action until they are certain that everything is correct. Too often, they put work before pleasure and suppress personal needs. Their great strengths are their high standards, devotion, honesty, responsibility and idealism. It helps Ones to allow themselves more pleasure, to accept error and differences, detaching self-esteem from internal standards and to realise that we are all lovable, though imperfect.
Anyone who knows that they are Type 1 and would be willing to be on a panel to help illustrate the Type, please let Rosemary know – please phone her on 0788 449 0218 if you would like to know more about it.
